Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing such treatments must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
