Google to Invest $15bn to Build AI Data Hub in India

AI Data Center
India stands as a prime location for computing facilities because of its low data costs and rapidly growing digital audience.

Google's parent company Alphabet plans to commit $15bn to establish an AI computing facility in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India.

The infrastructure, that is planned in the harbor town of Visakhapatnam, will become a part of Google's international system of artificial intelligence hubs distributed over 12 countries.

"This represents the biggest artificial intelligence center that we plan to invest in worldwide, excluding the United States," Google Cloud's chief executive stated at an conference in the capital city of Delhi on Tuesday, noting that the financial commitment is to be distributed throughout the next half-decade.

The announcement occurs when US President Donald Trump has been encouraging American companies to give priority to investments within the country.

The Expanding Position of India in AI Infrastructure

India has emerged as a key destination for AI data centres. The country's affordable data pricing and rapidly growing online population have made it a hub for expansion of cloud and artificial intelligence for tech giants.

"The facility will introduce our cutting-edge technology to enterprises and users in the nation, speeding up AI development and stimulating expansion across the country," said Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet.

Initiative Particulars

A formal agreement to complete the venture is set to be signed soon, state authorities said.

"This represents a major step forward for our state's technological advancement, progress, and global standing," said the state's technology minister Nara Lokesh.

The project will integrate AI and cloud systems with renewable energy systems and an enhanced optical fiber network.

Andhra Pradesh's Data Center Vision

The venture forms part of the Andhra Pradesh government's strategy to develop 6GW of data centre capacity by the year 2029.

Data centres are actual buildings that contain the networking and computing devices that organizations use to accumulate, handle, retain, and circulate data.

These include hosting servers, data storage systems and networking hardware like routers and firewalls, in addition to the required energy and climate management infrastructure to run them.

Financial Attractions

In Andhra Pradesh, the state authorities has been providing subsidised land and electricity to entice worldwide funders.

Market Development

The nation's data center sector has expanded quickly during the last five years, crossing the 1GW capacity mark in 2024 and approximately tripling its 2019 level.
