A Farm Announces Robbery of €90K Worth of Escargot

Cleared Shelves at Snail Farm Following Significant Robbery

Burglars made off with escargot worth ninety thousand euros from a producer in northern France that supplies high-end restaurants.

L'Escargot Des Grands Crus in Bouzy, close to Reims, stated that its entire inventory of fresh and frozen snails was taken—a “major setback” just before the holiday season.

The intruders broke into the farm during the night leading to Monday, cutting a border fence before accessing farm buildings.

Police were notified days after the incident, and investigators are currently pursuing leads.

In the meantime, the business is working to restock to satisfy holiday demand from customers.

Snails: A French Delicacy

Edible snails are regarded as a culinary specialty in France, typically cooked in garlic butter or wine before being removed from their shells.

Producers in France typically experience a increase in demand around December, as people treat themselves with the dish for Christmas Eve and New Year’s festivities.

“This is definitely not the kind of announcement we expected we’d share as the festive season approach,” the farm stated in a message regarding the theft.

They continued to describe the event as “surprising, bewildering, and a serious setback to the entire team,” noting, “We are doing everything possible to restock our supplies to meet the needs of our customers for the holidays.”

Impact of the Robbery

Images taken following the burglary reveal shelves and refrigerators nearly completely emptied of snail products.

“A whole section of prepared goods was taken from the warehouse, and raw material inventory from my production area,” the farm manager commented.

“This represented my end-of-year stock… We had precisely enough to manage the festive season without any worries.”

The farm has in the past provided restaurants such as award-winning restaurants in Reims, as well as specialty food shops and individual customers.

At present, the business is focused on bouncing back and making sure that holiday orders can still be fulfilled despite the major setback.
